• 1978-1998: Columbia University Law School professor; during this time, Young also held several posts in the administration of President George H.W. Bush.

• 1998-2004: Dean, George Washington University Law School; also a professor.

• 2004-2011: President, University of Utah.

 2011-present: President, University of Washington.
